Health & Safety Briefing

Passmore Edwards Institute Management committee strive hard to provide a safe and good quality room for your use and hope you enjoy using it. We are a charity run by volunteers, not a business. Health & Safety and Fire Risk Assessments have been completed for the building and are regularly reviewed. The building health and safety evidence is in the labelled downstairs kitchen cupboard including copies of our policies. Please ensure you have read this briefing and made your group aware of the following:

1. Slips, trips & falls - Practice good housekeeping and safe methods of operation – ensure no trailing leads and any equipment is safely stacked/stored after use.
2.
Set up of rooms - please be aware that you need to set up your own room . Tables and chairs are in the building for your use. Please check safety before use and set up as you required but replace back when finished, cleaning any items if needed.
3.
Electricity – all electrical circuits are certified safe but any additional equipment brought into the building by yourselves as room bookers/users must have a current PAT label .
4.
Heating - The electric radiators temperature is set to a constant temperature. In spring summer months they may be turned off. The on/off switch is either on the side or back of the radiator. Please do not touch the electric wall plug as it will upset the setting programme. Please keep room doors closed to preserve heat in the building. Also be aware that the radiators will be warm and please supervise keep children and
vulnerable adults.
5.
Internet security - the WiFi is a public network please ensure you have your own internet security if this is required.
6.
Public liability - There is general public liability insurance for the building but as room bookers/businesses you must ensure you have your own public liability for your groups welfare and health and safety.
7.
Fire Safety – familiarise yourselves with the layout of the building. Evacuation point is outside of the building by the old telephone box/pavement.
This is a NO smoking building Prepare an attendance list for your group for use as a roll call in an
emergency. Check fire exits, escape routes and fire fighting equipment
before your event. Keep all Fire Exits and Escape Routes free from obstruction. Be aware of potential causes of fire.

No untrained people should attempt to extinguish a fire. If necessary dial 999 to call the Fire Brigade.
8. Medical Emergency – Only a trained First Aider should provide First Aid treatment.
Common sense First attention is essential to prevent further complications. There are First Aid kits in the upstairs and downstairs kitchens. Call a public ambulance as necessary.
9.
Safeguarding policy - Groups and businesses must follow their own safeguarding policies. The building has it’s own which follows Cornwall Safeguarding procedures. Please see notice board/evidence folder for further details and who to contact if required.
10.
Incident Reporting - Any accident which requires medical attention must be reported to the Building Trustees. If it is serious this must be done as soon as possible after contacting emergency services and the Caretaker 07739379144 or Trustee Chairman 07542282436 or Secretary on 07527086429 / email passmoreedwardshayle@gmail.com An Incident Report form must be completed and details entered in the accident book.
